Belonging to the sterculiaceae family and to the same genus of cacao, the cupuaçu tree (Theobrama grandiflorum) is a medium-sized tree (3-6m height), native of the Amazon. Its branches are long and thick, but flexible. Its leaves, very big, can reach 50cm of length. Its flowers, of a dark-red color, blossom on the branches and are presented in panicles or composed clusters.

The cupuaçu fruit dimensions are 15cm length by 10cm diameter. It weighs 800 to 1 500g, and contains numerous seeds in a white aromatic pulp of sweet-and-sour taste, largely used in the production of delicious juices, ice-creams, sweets, liqueurs and a special brandy known as “cupuaçu wine”. The rind can be used to feed animals, and the seeds, due to their high content of fat, are suitable for the production of chocolate (known as cupulate), as a substitute for the cacao seeds. In the cosmetic industry, the seed’s fat serves as base for lotions and Lipsticks.
