Deodoro da Fonseca born in Alagoas  (1827-1892) . He is the first president of the Republic. He was born in the city of Alagoas, Marechal Deodoro makes career in the Army. He combats the Revolta Praieira in Pernambuco, in 1848, and it participates in the War of Cisplatina and of the War of Paraguay.

He earn the marshal-of-field position in 1884 and the following year, he is named the field marshal of Rio Grande do Sul. In 1886 he goes to Rio de Janeiro and it assumes the leadership of the faction of the favorable Army to the abolition of the slavery. His prestige places it ahead of the military movement that knocks down the Monarchy and he proclaims the Republic, on November 15, 1889. During his temporay leadership, enters in conflict with the civil leaderships and resists to the summons of the Constituent Assembly. His election as president, in 1891, he is guaranteed by the pressure of the military in Congress.

He tries to win the opposition articulating a coup, but he faces resistance in the Army, comanded by the vice-president, marshal Floriano Peixoto. He gives up his position November 23, 1891.

 


Deodoro da Fonseca, alagoano (1827-1892) . É o primeiro presidente da República . Nasce na cidade de Alagoas, hoje Marechal Deodoro, e faz carreira no Exército. Combate a Revolta Praieira em Pernambuco, em 1848, e participa da Guerra da Cisplatina e da Guerra do Paraguai. Chega ao posto de marechal-de-campo em 1884 e, no ano seguinte, é nomeado comandante de armas do Rio Grande do Sul.

Em 1886 vai para o Rio de Janeiro e assume a liderança da facção do Exército favorável à abolição da escravatura. Seu prestígio o coloca à frente do movimento militar que derruba a Monarquia e proclama a República, em 15 de novembro de 1889 (ver Proclamação da República). Ao chefiar o governo provisório, entra em conflito com as lideranças civis e resiste à convocação da Assembléia Constituinte. Sua eleição como presidente, em 1891, é garantida pela pressão dos militares sobre o Congresso.

Tenta vencer a oposição articulando um golpe de Estado, mas enfrenta resistência no Exército, chefiada pelo vice-presidente, marechal Floriano Peixoto . Renuncia em 23 de novembro de 1891.
