CENTENÁRIO DO NASCIMENTO DE OSCAR LORENZO FERNANDEZ E FRANCISCO MIGNONE

   FRANCISCO MIGNONE

CENTENARY OF BIRTH OF OSCAR LORENZO FERNANDEZ AND FRANCISCO MIGNONE

 FRANCISCO MIGNONE

Francisco Mignone was bom in São Paulo on September 3rd, 1897, out of Italian parents who had recently come to Brazil. As of his 13 years of age, he started to perform as a flutist and pianist in small orchestras. His academic studies in São Paulo were continued in Milan, where he moved to in 1920. For some time, he wrote erudite works signing his own name, and other popular works signing his pseudonym “Chico Bororó”, most of these were recorded in 78 rpm, with orchestras conducted by his father. His first success was the opera “O Contratador de Diamantes” (The Diamond Contractor), which opened in Rio de Janeiro in 1924, with “Congada” as a part of it. He definitively returned to Brazil in 1929, settling down in São Paulo and then, as of 1933, in Rio de Janeiro, succeeding Walter Burle Marx as a professor of Regency of the National Institute of Music.

Upon his return from Europe, Mignone resumes contact with Mário de Andrade, whose influence was decisive towards the adoption of musical nationalism, although he had already written other works of high national character, such as “Congada” - and, naturally, Chico Bororó’s works. Some of his most significant works were written in the 1930’s and 40’s: “Sinfonia do Trabalho” (Work Symphony), Maracatu do Chico-Rei, Festa das Igrejas (Celebration of the Churches), Leilão (Auction). It is a always usefui to highlight some of his countless waltzes for piano, which led his friend Manuel Bandeira to name him “the king of waltz”. His vocal work is fundamental; from those for voice and piano to those for chorus. instrumental or not, such as his six Missas (Masses) and the oratorio Alegrias de Nossa Senhora (Our Lady’s Joys), with its text written by CecIlia Meireles. He still wrote several works for trios, quartets and other instrumental groups..

Francisco Mignone died on February 18th, 1986.
