100 VEARS OF HOUSING OF THE MINISTRV OF FOREIGN RELATIONS ATTHE "PALÁCIO ITAMARATV" IN RIO DE JANEIRO
The "Palácio Itamaraty", built in the middle of the 19th century by the second Baron of Itamaraty, son of the wealthy and influent Portuguese trader, is considered one of the most beautiful examples of the neoclassical architecture of Rio de Janeiro.
After the monarchy has ended and after having housed the governments of the three first Presidents of the Republic, the building was ceded to the Ministry of Foreign Relations in 1897, but actually started functioning only in 1899. The Ministry occupied the building until 1970 when the its headquarters were transferred to Brasília.
Constructed in the golden age of the Brazilian Empire, the "Palácio" reflects the spirit of an epoch marked by the wealth and the sense of balance, nobility and elegance. Behind the discreet façade, are hidden silk-covered walls and richly furnished rooms, besides a great number of pieces of art, crystal chandeliers, lamp brackets, vases, clocks, silver and bronze candelabra, large mirrors, rugs and tapestries, in short, all the decorative elements characteristic of the last century manor houses. In 1955, was created the Historical and Diplomatic Museum of Itamaraty - MHD which, presently, occupies all the rooms of the historic residence.
As the headquarters of the Brazilian diplomatic service, the "Palácio" became famous mainly due to the administration of the Baron of Rio Branco, as Chancellor. As time passed by, the identification between the "Palácio" and the Ministry of Foreign Relations was such that the name Itamaraty became a synonym of the Brazilian diplomacy.
In the earlier times, behind the "Palácio" there was a beautiful garden called "Itamaraty Park". Between 1927 and 1930, it was replaced by a large and rectangular water pool on which glide haughty swans, sided by two double alleys of remaining imperial palm trees.
The other buildings that are part of the complex form around the lake a square characterized by the architectonic harmony of their neoclassic lines, creating a peaceful and bucolic oasis in the middle of the hectic downtown. Among them is the outstanding building that houses the Library, Archives and Map collection.
The "Palácio Itamaraty" in Rio de Janeiro gathers an important documentary, cartographic, bibliographic and icon collection that added to the important art collection of the MHD and the precious architecture of its buildings constitute a patrimony of inestimable value. The "Palácio" is also noticed by the sentiments it arouses from the nostalgic "cariocas", eternally proud of their city.
