I Centenary of the Brazilian Academy of Literature
On July 20th, 1997, the Centenary of the Brazilian Academy (ABL) will be celebrated. It was inspired by the Académie Française (French Academy). The institution Cardinal Richelieu brought to life reaches 360 years making French language portray the greatness of the French Monarchy. The Brazilian Academy has lived for 100 years over Machado de Assis's inspiring ideal, which was summarized in his inaugurational session discourse, on July 1897, as the will to "preserve, within the political federation, the literary unity."
The Academy dates back to 1623, when Gregório de Matos was born. He is the oldest literary figure of the national culture incorporated to the Institution, whose mission has been fulfilled with constancy, work and creative inspiration from the times of the forty patrons, who were all deceased by 1897, to the current forty members of the Petit Trianon.
The Brazilian Academy's saga refers, therefore, to the first heroic years, when it had not even headquarters to shelter its members. But, from then to the Petit Trianon (1923), and since 1979, at the Centro Cultural do Brasil (The Brazilian Cultural Center), its history has been basically written through the biographies and works of those who are elected to fill its 40 chairs. Including the patrons, founders and successors, the Board of Permanent Members gathers 252 Brazilian writers, while the Board of Temporary Members, whose patrons are prominent Brazilian and Portuguese writers, is made up of 138 foreign writers affiliated to the Institution.
Whether they are permanent members or temporary ones, they are all called forth by Machado de Assis's word of command in his preliminary discourse: "Pass the initial thought and will onto your successors, so that they can pass them onto theirs as well, and your work shall be written in the sound and shiny pages of our Brazilian life".
