BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC HOMAGE TO ADONIRAN BARBOSA Son of Italian immigrants from Venice, Adoniran Barbosa his real name was João Rubinato) was born in Valinhos, São Paulo, in 1910. His activities in the artistic field have involved many fronts: in radio he worked as speaker, show-man, radiosoap actor and comedianthis one also in television some years later. As "samba" composer he first appeared in the 40's. Adoniran Barbosa, the most original of the São Paulo's samba composers, has depicted that city through songs of naive melodies and Lyrics of spaghetti style. The great originality of his works consists of mixing the ill spoken Portuguese of lower classes to the mispronounced popular language product of the melting pot formed by immigrants from different countries notably the Italians (reason of his spaghetti style, in a certain measure comparable in literature to the pre-modernist poet Juó Bananére, also born in São Paulo). A mix of humor and melancholy marked the way he sang the dramas of popular, humble and suffering characters living throughout the violence brought by the urbanization process. Those characteristics are present in the great classics of the Brazilian popular music he has composed such as: "Saudosa Maloca", "Samba do Arnesto", "Trem das Onze", "Iracema", "Tiro ao Álvaro". Among the less known works, Adoniran has composed a song with Vinicius de Moraes"Bom Dia, Tristeza", first recorded by Aracy de Almeida. His major interpreter was the vocal-instrumental group "Demônios da Garoa", but many other singers have sung his songs such as the most recent generation of the Brazilian Popular Music: João Gilberto, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Rita Lee and João Bosco. Adoniran died in São Paulo in 1982. Together with Paulo Vanzolini, Adoniran Barbosa is the greatest name of the history of "samba" in São Paulo and one of the greatest of the country.
