CENTENÁRIO DE BELO HORIZONTE Belo Horizonte uma jovem de cem anos, é uma cidade do presente, moderna, fiel ao espírito de seus criadores. CENTENARY OF BELO HORIZONTE Belo Horizonte, is a centenary but still young city, which is true to the spirit of its creators. This first planned Brazilian State capital has already exceeded the 300 thousand-inhabitant limit, which was idealized by its founders. It has, nowadays, 2.1 million inhabitants. Belo Horizonte is the center of a metropolitan complex, with 24 municipalities and a population of more than 3 million inhabitants. Broadly speaking, Belo Horizonte is the core of a potential consume market of 6 million people who live in 80 municipalities located in a 100 kilometers radius area. The Capital of the Century has altitudes ranging from 750 up to 1,350 meters. Its weather is mild, with average temperature of 21 C and an excellent sunshine level. That is why, in the 40's, it was considered as the Garden City, and it seeks to keep this title by having a high level of green area per inhabitant (27,15rn2), along with 42 municipal parks, such as Américo René Giannetti, with more than 180 thousand m2, downtown, and Mangabeiras, in the South, with more than 3 million m2 of native vegetation. Among Belo Horizonte's attractions, Pampulha Pond, an artificial lake of 18 km2 of perimeter deserves to be mentioned. It is the center of the landscaping architectonic complex of Pampulha, which is a landmark of world modern architecture and a result of statesman Juscelino Kubitschek's ideal, coupled with the talent of artists such as Oscar Niemeyer, Burle Marx and Ceschiatti. It is also around Pampulha that Mineirão is located. One of the biggest soccer stadiums in the world, with room for 130 thousand people. There is also the Mineirinho Gymnasium, which has facilities for both sports and concerts and a capacity for 25 thousand people. Belo Horizonte's geographic location is one of the reasons why it is favorably distinguished from the rest of the Brazilian State capitals. The capital of Minas Gerais is equidistant from the main economic and administrative centers (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia), having easy access, by land and air, to the main Brazilian regions, as well as to other countries, by regular flights. The diversity and the quality of tourist attractions of Belo Horizonte's surrounding municipalities motivate tourism in the region too. Belo Horizonte is in a period of cultural growth, which is made clear by the strong incentive to culture and leisure. Its entertainment places have been extended and, nowadays, there are 31 cinemas, 18 theatres and several huge nightclubs, as well as countless pubs, marked by joy and relaxation, thus allowing this centenary capital a chance to offer an excellent nightlife.
