The novelist, short story, epistolary, chronicle writer and critic José Maria Eça de Queiroz (baptism name of the great writer), was born in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal on November 25, 1845, and died on August 16, 1890, in Paris, France.

Eça de Queiroz began his studies in Porto/Portugal and graduated from Law in 1866 by the University of Coimbra.

After graduation the writer wend into law practice in Lisbon where he founded and was in charge of the oposition’s political newspaper “Distrito de Evora” (Evora’s District). In 1867 he became member of the “Cenáculo”, a group constituted by intelectuais that unleashed the realistic movement in Portugal. Living at times when the socialist movements were-acquiring strength and influencing the arts, this group tried to present artistic productions committed with the transformation of society.

Eça began his literary career in 1866 in the newspaper “Gazeta de Portugal” (Portugal News) and published his first verses in the magazine “Revolução de Setembro” (September Revolution) under the pseudonym “Carlos Fradique Mendes”, a supposed interlocutor with whom he corresponded regularly. During his life he published articles in many periodicals among which several newspapers.

As observes the professor and essayist Jorge Fernandes da Silveira. Eça de Queiroz along with Cesário Verde - his contemporary - brought about a new manner of “writing Portugal”, manner that would be widely used and divulged throughout the 19’h century by Portuguese authors. Ironic writer, he has revitalized the prose fiction of his country through neologisms and resources of the spoken language that prevented the traditional purism.

Considered by some literary critics as the major Portuguese realism-naturalism representative, Eça became -in João Gaspar Simões’ opinion - one of “the major figures of the Portuguese literature of all times and certainly the writer who has given to the literary language of Portugal and Brazil its fluid, malleable and modern character”.
