FERNANDO DE AZEVEDO
Fernando de Azevedo nasceu a 2 de abril de 1894, na cidade de São Gonçalo do Sapucaí, no Estado de Minas Gerais e faleceu em São Paulo-SP; em 18 de setembro de 1974.
Após ter terminado o curso secundário ingressou no noviciado da Companhia de Jesus, em Campanha-MG, renunciando à vida religiosa após um ano de recolhimento no Colégio São Luís.
Mudou-se para São Paulo em 1917, ingressando no jornalismo como crítico literário. Como colaborador de O Estado de São Paulo levantou o grande inquérito sobre a instrução pública que objetivava a criação da Universidade, publicado em livro em 1937 e incorporado assuas obras literárias sob o título A Educação na Encruzilhada. Este levantamento é marco decisivo na história educacional brasileira.
Fernando de Azevedo acreditava na força predominante das idéias como fator de mudança social. Fundou a Associação Brasileira de Educação, em 1924, e deu corpo ao movimento pela reforma do ensino por intermédio das "Conferências de Educação", em 1922. A frente da Instrução Pública do Rio de Janeiro, implementa uma autêntica revoluçao pedagógica no ensino primário e secundário e, sobretudo, no ensino normal.
Foi fundador, organizador e diretor da Biblioteca Pedagógica Brasileira e da coleção Brasiliana, importantes iniciativas editoriais. Participou de manifestos e de movimentos como o da Escola Nova (1932) e o da fundação da Universidade de São Paulo, da qual foi um dos planejadores. Entre 1941/43 foi Diretor da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras; foi também o primeiro ocupante da cadeira de Sociologia naquela Universidade. Foi Secretário da Educação e Saúde do Estado de São Paulo (1945) e Secretário da Educação e Cultura da Prefeitura de São Paulo (1961).
Autor de obra vasta e notável, foi eleito para a Academia Brasileira de Letras em 1968, onde ocupou a cadeira de número 14.

Fernando de Azevedo was born on April 2, 1894, in São Gonçalo do Sapucaí, State of Minas Gerais, and died in São Paulo, SP on September 18, 1974.
After finishing high school, he was admitted to the seminary of the Company of Jesus, in Campanha-MG, but resigned to the religious life after one year of solitude at the College São Luís.
He moved to São Paulo in 1917, and started to work in journalism as literary critic. In the newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo", he conducted the wide survey on public education that aimed at creating the University, that later was published as book in 1937 and incorporated to his literary works as "A Educação na Encruzilhada". That survey is the decisive mark in the Brazilian educational history.
Fernando de Azevedo believed in the predominant power of ideas as factor for social changing. He founded the Brazilian Association of Education in 1924, and was a source of strength to the movement for reforming teaching policy through "Conferences on education", in 1922. Heading the "Public Education of Rio de Janeiro" he implanted an authentic pedagogic revolution in the elementary, junior high and high school teaching structure, and, specially in the teachers training courses.
Founder, organizer and director of the Brazilian Pedagogic Library and of the collection "Brasiliana", major publisher initiatives. Participant of manifestations and movements such as the ones concerning "Escola Nova" (1932) and the foundation of the University of São Paulo of which he was one of the planners. During 1941/43, Director of the Faculty of Philosophy, Science and Humane Letters, and first professor of sociology at that University. Secretary of Education and Health of the State of São Paulo (1945) and Secretary of Education and Culture of the City of São Paulo (1961).
Author of many and remarkable works, he was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Humane Letters in 1968, occupying chair number 14.
