FREYRE
GILBERTO DE MELLO FREYRE nasceu no Recife em 15 de março de 1900. Na
capital pernambucana fez o curso primário e secundário, além de estudar
francês, desenho e latim. Nos Estados Unidos tornou-se bacharel em Artes
Liberais pela Universidade de Baylor e obteve grau de mestre pela Universidade
de Columbia.
Realizou uma vasta obra de interpretação da cultura brasileira, muito
especialmente no entendimento das relações sociais nas regiões agrárias do
Brasil, nas quais o patriarcalismo rural e o paternalismo senhorial são faces
determinantes da realidade.
Além do estudo da própria identidade do Brasil e do brasileiro, o
conjunto de sua obra, na sua vastidão e diversidade, retrata a terra, a vida,
as coisas, os animais, os fatos do cotidiano, a casa, a moda. São dele,
pioneiramente, os mais sérios e aprofundados estudos sobre o Nordeste e o Trópico,
interessando-lhe, sobretudo, o homem situado nesses espaços geográficos,
considerando todas as circunstâncias dessa localização e avaliando as
conseqüências daí decorrentes.
Embora a sua obra seja numerosíssima, é indispensável fazer referência
a livros como Casa Grande & Senzala, Sobrados e Mucambos, Ordem e
Progresso, Nordeste, Sociologia, Novo mundo nos trópicos, Aventura e Rotina,
Além do apenas moderno, Tempo morto e outros tempos, Açúcar, entre outros.
Foi o escritor brasileiro que recebeu as maiores distinções, o maior
reconhecimento de universidades e instituições brasileiras e estrangeiras.
Recebeu o título de Doutor honoris causa pelas Universidades de Columbia,
Baylor, Oxford, Sorbonne, Munique, Salamanca, e homenagens dos Estados Unidos,
da França, da Inglaterra, de Portugal, da Espanha, entre outras. Foi distingüido
com o título de Sir Cavaleiro do Império Britânico, pela Rainha
Elizabeth II da Inglaterra; recebeu o Prêmio Internacional La Madoninna e o
Prêmio Aspen pelo que há de original, excepcional e de valor permanente em
sua obra. Foi eleito, por aclamação, Membro da Academia Pernambucana de
Letras, ocupando a cadeira n° 23.

GILBERTO DE
MELLO FREYRE was born in Recife, Brazil, on March 15, 1900. There, in the
capital of Pernambuco State, he went to elementary and high school, besides
studying French, Design and Latin. In the United States, he graduated in
Liberal Arts by the University of Baylor and obtained his Masters Degree by
the University of Columbia.
He engaged
himself in a vast work of interpretation of the Brazilian culture,
particularly in the comprehension of the social relations in rural areas of
Brazil, where rural patriarchalism and manorial paternalism are dominant
aspects of such reality.
Besides the
study of the own identity of Brazil and of the Brazilian citizen, his works,
in their vastness and diversity, portrait land, life, things, animals,
day-to-day facts, home, fashion. To him are owed the credits of the first and
more thorough and serious study on Brazilian Northeastern Region and the
Tropics, in which he focuses primarily on the man who lives in such
geographical spaces, considering all circumstances of such location and
evaluating the consequences that might arise from it.
In spite of his numerous works, it
is
impossible not to refer to books such as The Master and the Slaves: a study
in the development of the Brazilian Civilization; The Mansions and the
Shanties: the making of modem Brazil; Order and Progress:
Brazil
from Monarchy to Republic; New World in the Tropics: the culture of modern
Brazil, among many others.
He was the
Brazilian writer who was most acclaimed and recognized by universities and
institutions in Brazil and worldwide. He received the title of Doctor honors
causa from the Universities of Columbia, Baylor, Oxford, Munich, Salamanca and
honors from the United States, France, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, among
others. He was given the title of Sir Knight of the British Empire, by Queen
Elizabeth II. He also received the La Madoninna and Aspen Awards for the
originality exceptionality and permanent value of his works. He was acclaimed
as well a member of the Academy of Letters of Pernambuco State, Brazil, being
given chair no. 23.
