Joaquim Nabuco

JOAQUIM NABUCO
Joaquim Nabuco Joaquim Aurélio Barreto Nabuco de Araujo was born on August 19h, 1849, in an old building of the Aterro da Boa Vista Street (presently the Empress Tereza Cristina Street) in Recife, state of Pernambuco, son of the then future Senator José Tomás Nabuco de Araujo and his wife Ana Benigna de Sá Barreto.
Due to his parents presence at Court, he spent his early years at the Massangana Sugar Mill, in the Cape of St. Augustin, with the owners of the sugar mill, his godfather Joaquim Aurélio Pereira de Carvalho and his godmother Ana Rosa Falcão de Carvalho. The direct contact with the country life style made him feel how much the slavery was unfair and iniquitous, and the necessity to eradicate it from the country, as he wrote in his memoirs "My Formation".
In 1878, Joaquim Nabuco was elected a congressman by the province of Pernambuco. Together with other young congressmen he initiated the campaign against slavery and in favor of its abolition. He organized and set up in his residence the Brazilian Society against Slavery, challenging the conservative elite of that time. While defending the cause of abolitionism, he supported the freedom for the sexagenarians and greatly contributed to the approval of the Law "Aurea" through his parliamentary performance, his books and the abolitionist campaign.
In the public life, between periods of intense intellectual activity and public positions and missions. Joaquim Nabuco has also participated in the creation of the Brazilian Academy of Letters which had Machado de Assis as its first president and Nabuco as perpetual secretary.
After the proclamation of the Republic, Nabuco dedicated his time to the letters - his remarkable book "A Statesman of the Empire"- and was in charge of important diplomatic missions, invited by the Government. He was indicated Ambassador of Brazil in Washington where he developed a Pan-American policy. He died in the American capital, Washington, on January 17th, 1910, as ambassador.
Joaquim Nabuco is therefore an important personality to be remembered when we commemorate his 150 years of birth.
