FAGUNDES VARELA
Luís
Nicolau Fagundes Varela nasceu na Fazenda Santa Rita, Município de Rio Claro,
Província do Rio de Janeiro, em 17.8.1841. Seus estudos preparatórios foram
iniciados em Angra dos Reis, continuados em Petrópolis e completados em São
Paulo, onde se matricula na Faculdade de Direito, em 1862, ano em que se casa em
Sorocaba. Seu filho Emiliano nasce em 1863 mas vive apenas três meses.
Atravessa uma fase muito difícil, com situação financeira precária, doença
da esposa e desencanto. Mas, nessa época, publica Vozes da América, onde inclui
O Cântico do Calvário, em homenagem ao filho morto.
Em 1865
embarca para o Recife onde pensa continuar os estudos jurídicos. Volta no
mesmo ano sem ter prestado exame e passa a viver uma vida errante,
constantemente embriagado, vindo a falecer em Niterói, no dia 18 de fevereiro
de 1875.
Fagundes
Varela é o maior nome da poesia brasileira no decênio 1860-1870. Foi o poeta
da infinidade de temas e de formas,
que foge a qualquer rótulo em
que se tenta aprisioná-lo. Foi lírico e épico, místico descritivo e bucólico.

Nicolau Fagundes Varela was born in the Ranch Santa Rita, Country of Rio Claro,
Province of Rio de Janeiro, on August 17, 1841. His preparatory studies were
begun in Angra dos Reis, continued in Petrópolis and completed in São Paulo
where he enrolls the Law School in 1862. In the same year, he gets married in
Sorocaba. His son Emiliano is born in 1863 but lives only three months. He goes
through a very difficult phase, with a precarious financial situation, his
wifes illness and disenchantment. But, at that time, he publishes Vozes da
América where he includes O Cântico do Calvário in honour of his
dead son.
In
1865 he leaves for Recife where he wishes to continue his juridical studies. In
the same year, he goes back without having taken the exam and starts to lead an
errant life, constantly drunk. He dies in Niterói on February 18, 1875.
Fagundes
Varela was the greatest name of Brazilian poetry during the period of 1860-1870.
He was the poet of the infinity of themes and shapes, the one who escapes from
any label we may try to imprison him. He was lyric and epic, descriptive mystic
and bucolic.
