400 YEARS OF SAINT BENEDICT MONASTERY -SÃO PAULO

The Saint Benedict Monastery is the oldest institution in São Paulo, ‘which has not moved”. in its four-century existence, the Saint Benedict Monastery in São Paulo has undergone several transformations though; since the humble Hermitage, founded by Benedictine Friar Mauro Teixeira to the architectonic monument, in Norman-Byzantine style, built by the dynamic Abbot Don Miguel Kruse, and inaugurated in 1922 by Legate Cardinal Don Aidano Gasquet S.B.O.

In these four centuries, there were 66 Abbots, Friar Álvaro de Hinojosa y Carvajal was the first one, who was elected in Portugal in 1635, and the current one is Don Isidoro Oliveira Preto, who was elected in 1989.

Ever since its foundation, in 1598, the Saint Benedict Monastery in São Paulo, as well as other Benedictine Monasteries in Brazil, depended on the Benedictine Congregation of Portugal”, which was founded in 1566, through Papal bull by Pope Pius V. The Brazilian Benedictine Congregation was created in 1827, through Leo XII’s Papal bull.

The Monastery’s Community in São Paulo was not one of the largest in the Benedictine Congregation. ln 1855, with the governmental prohibition to novice acceptance, the Community was reduced to just a monk, Abbot Friar Pedro da Ascensão Moreira, who died at the beginning of this century, on July 15th. At the present, in Don Isidoro Oliveira Preto’s term as the sixtieth sixth Abbot since the first to be appointed, in 1635, the Monastery shelters around 40 monks, both Fathers and students.

Several outstanding characters have passed by the four-hundred-year history of the Saint Benedict Monastery in São Paulo, such as Fernão Dias Paes Leme, who reconstructed the temple prior to the current one, and is presently buried in the Basilica; also Friar Gaspar da Madre de Deus, “The Historian of the First Years of São Paulo”, according to a plate placed at the Historic Institute. AlI of them, monks and benefactor laymen have made the history of Saint Benedict Monastery in São Paulo.
