BRAZILIAN PINE ( Araucaria angustifolia)

The Brazilian Pine is a tree of the family Araucariacea, native of the Southern woods and fields. It may also be called Araucaria, Pine, Paraná pine, Missions pine, Curíi, Curl or Curiúva (native names).

This tall pine, which reaches 40 to 50 meters high, is characterized by its verticillate spreading. As the tree grows mature, it resembles a cup.

The most common area to find the araucaria is the State of Paraná, where it is considered the State tree, thus leading some to call it Paraná pine.

The Brazilian pine is currently considered an endangered species, since its territory was reduced from 7,5 million hectares (43% of the territory of the State of Paraná) to around 150 thousand hectares (0,75% of the State territory), due to intense depletion of timber stocks.
