The 100th Anniversary of the Port of Santos
The construction of the dock of the Port of Santos was started in July, 1888. In February 1892, theship"NASMITH "inaugurated the first course - which was 260 meters long -, registering the historical moment when the simple anchorage became Brazil's first organized port.
The work represented the overcoming of significant technical difficulties, which had challenged the construction ability of Brazilian engineers for many years.
The Port of Santos, which has its origins linked to the coffee trade, helped to improve the sanitary conditions of the region. It also played an important role in the industrial development of the State of São Paulo and of Brazil as a whole.
From November 1980 onward, the administration of the Port of Santos was encharged to Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (CODESP), a joint-stock company - with shares controlled by the Ministry of Infrastructure - replacing Companhia Docas de Santos, the enterprise which had just finished its 90 - year term Concession Contract.
The Port is located at the middle of the coastline of the State of São Paulo. It was built along the banks of an estuary, limited by the islands of São Vicente and Santo Amara, and also by the continent itself, where stand the cities of Santos, São Vicente, Guarujá and Cubatão.
The Port of Santos is connected with the industrial park of the Metropolis of São Paulo and with the productive centers of smaller cities (through two highways and two railroads). It consists of approximately 14 kilometers of landing area for ships, including the private terminals.
It has 38 front warehouses and 34 rear warehouses, which together can store about one million tons of various goods. The Port's yards and sheds can store some additional 400 thousand tons.
The Port of Santos is the nation's leader in the port market, and it has accounted for about 30% of Brazil's exchange revenue in the last few years. The hinterland of the Port includes the States of São Paulo, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and part of the States of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Mato Grosso. It also serves the capital of the country, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Besides providing for direct employment in the biggest labor market of the region of Santos, the Port offers significant work opportunities in correlative fields of activity. In fact, estimates show that approximately one third of the population of Santos works - directly or indirectly -for the Port of Santos.
Nowadays, the Port operates with 8,500 CODESP employees, along with about the same number of other workers (checkers, stevedores, shipwrights, watchmen, etc). Besides these, the shipping clerks and the employees of transportation, inspection and insurance companies - among others - must be considered. On the whole, there are about 30 thousand people involved in activities related to the Port of Santos.
