PROANTAR
|
THE BRAZILIAN ANTARCTIC PROGRAM
The execution of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR), implemented in January 1982, is decentralized into several universities, research institutes and other public and private institutes, according to a plan elaborated by the lnterministerial Commission for Marine Resources (CIRM), whose coordination is carried out by the Ministry of Navy.
The scientific activities are supported by the National Council for Scientific and technological Development (CNPq), which is a division of the Ministry of Science an Technology. Such activities are grouped into scientific sub-programs on atmosphere, land, life; and also continental geophysics, encompassing the following areas of research: atmospheric circulation, high atmosphere physics, climatologic, meteorology, continental and marine geology, glaciology, oceanography, biology, ecology, astrophysics, nuclear geomagnetism and geophysics. There are 24 scientific projects planned for the period 1996-97.
Brazilian activities in Antarctic are based at the "Comandante Feraz" Antarctic Station (EACF), in four quarters settled on Elephant, Nelson and King George Islands, and on board the 'Any Rongel" Oceanographic Support Ship (NAPOc).
The EACF was established on February 6, 1984, in "Almirantado" Bay, on King George Island, South Shetland Archipelago, and marks the Brazilian presence in Antarctic. Nowadays, there are sixty-two lodgings, which may accommodate up to 24 researchers. The station is run by a 10-man Support Group from the Brazilian Navy. Since March 1996, each Support Group has served in land for a twelve-month term. The quarters are in a container style and may shelter up to six researchers in the summer.
The "Ary Rongel" NAPOc (ex-Polar Queen) was bought in March 1994. It operates with two small helicopters, has a laboratory for research in the fields of meteorology and oceanography, both physical and biological. The ship may accommodate up to 27 researchers.
The Brazilian effort in Antarctic also includes the Brazilian Air Force, which flies seven support missions a year, for researchers' exchange and logistic support to the EACF in the winter.
Counting on the effort of its scientists and logistic support personnel, along with the cooperation of the International Antarctic Community, the Brazilian Antarctic Program has striven to clearly state our firm interest in the future of the Antarctic Continent.
